If I am walking with two other men, each of them will serve as my teacher. I will pick out the good points of the one and imitate them, and the bad points of the other and correct them in myself.

My Mother used to say something similar:  everyone is an example of ‘who to be’ or ‘who not to be’.

She’s a wise woman.

Bernie Prat fires the ‘Cannon of Life’ to kick off the engagement!

I’m getting Married!

I proposed to Jenny on Saturday at Lake Mohegan in Connecticut.  We had the pleasure of sharing the news with most of her family in addition to celebrating mother’s day.

Some quotes:

“This is better than a dishwasher!” ~Grandma Crowley.  Apparently, we one-upped the mother’s day gift that her sons got for her.

“Finally!” ~Jenny’s Mom.

“Hey man, Congrats.  Keiren is sobbing, hold on a sec.”  ~Cousin Martin, referencing my godmother.

We have not set an official date yet.  However we are overjoyed with the support, congratulations, and well wishes that we have received from everyone.

It appears the South has truly surrendered to the North.

There is a bizarre security in never going for what you really want. That thing, you know? That thing that immediately crests to the tip of your soul when someone asks you, “what would you do with your life if you could do anything?”
You think it, you feel it, and maybe you say it. But going for it is tricky goddamn business. Because if you don’t go for it, you still have it, cresting in the marrow of your bones. But if you do go for it, and you don’t get it, and you get rejected, you lose that whole crestingness of awesome thing.
If the door gets politely but firmly closed, you are out a whole shit ton of hope and wonder and possibility. If you are made of strong stuff, maybe you keep knocking on that politely but firmly closed door. Maybe keeping knocking keeps you going. If you are made of ego and pride, maybe you lick your wounds and take your ball and go home. Maybe you make the very best out of the next best thing and it becomes wonderful. But it is a different, less kind of dreamworld maybe.

Personally, I agree.  Fear of failure remains the hardest for me to conquer.

Conflict of Interest

EdX is based on MITx, a technological platform from MIT designed to offer online versions of their courses. These versions include: video lessons, embedded testing, real-time feedback, student-ranked questions and answers, collaborative web-based laboratories, and student paced learning. Though this will never replace the traditional residential model of undergraduate education, it will serve to improve and supplement the teaching and learning experienced at both universities. In turn, Harvard and MIT have created edX open-source software and invite interested institutions to join edX with their own educational content.

Two schools that currently use the historical educational business model have joined forces to fund progress on the new educational model, but at the same time claim it will never replace the old educational model.

This seems fundamentally flawed, especially when the initiative launches with an apology.

I recognize there are arguments to the positive in terms of access to students, name recognition, and a base of alumnae that tend to be thought leaders, but one cannot help but be bothered by an admission of defeat in the initial war cry.

After seeing the NFL’s decision letters, the NFLPA has still not received any detailed or specific evidence from the league of these specific players’ involvement in an alleged pay-to-injure program. We have made it clear that punishment without evidence is not fair. We have spoken with our players and their representatives and we will vigorously protect and pursue all options on their behalf. — DeMaurice Smith, NFL Players Association Executive Director

A well-ordered humanism does not begin with itself, but puts things back in their place. It puts the world before life, life before man, and the respect of others before love of self. — Claude Lévi-Strauss (via stoweboyd)
